Beginning Woodworking

Goals for this class include familiarizing students with project plans so they can build a project from included drawings, material lists and step-by-step procedure lists. Students will safely use a variety of hand tools, power tools, basic math and measuring concepts while building a project with a partner. This is an heirloom quality project (nightstand) that incorporates a variety of joinery, including rabbet, dado, miter, and raised panel. Integrity, punctuality, effective use of time, team work and leadership will be stressed as important employment skills and habits to be developed. This project should be completed by Thanksgiving and will then be available for purchase by students, parents and faculty.

While building the nightstand with a partner, you will be selecting a personal project. This project should be of a size and complexity to challenge your skills, not your budget.

Grading: First and second quarter grade plus first semester grade will be determined by points earned on tests, quizzes, daily work. The points will be earned based on attitude, cooperation, and usage of class time. Third and fourthquarter grades will be determined by daily work. Second semester grade will be determined by the third and fourth quarterpoints earned and the points earned by the student upon the completion of their approved project. Successful completion of personal project is a very important grade factor.
